For this list I put the films you can switch on and any
point and just watch it through to the end, these may not be the best films but
they are the most enjoyable ones.
12. Gone In Sixty Seconds
Director:
Dominic Sena
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, Giovanni
Ribisi
Basic Story: A retired master car thief must come
back to the industry and seal fifty cars with his crew in one night to save his
brother’s life.
Verdict: With plenty of fast cars, some very good car
chases. The villain in Christopher Eccleston is very no nonsense with an
obsession with woodwork. Nicolas Cage as the lead of a team full of future
stars and Hollywood Legend Robert Duvall blend perfectly. Add in the two Police
chasing them down one with history The former car thief, the other is a rookie
learning the ropes. When all these elements come together you can just sit back
and enjoy the film.
11. Con-Air
Director: Simon West
Starring: Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, John Malkovich
Basic Story: A newly released ex-con and former US
ranger finds himself trapped in a prisoner transport plans when the passengers
seize control
Verdict: Nicolas Cage again here in the late 90’s he
seemed to make some of the best action films and this one is the most enjoyable
of the lot. His character Cameron Poe is locked up for defending his pregnant
wife and himself from a group of drunks because of his Army training. He has
waited years to finally get to see his daughter and now he final gets that chance.
When the worst of the worst criminals get put on the same plane as Cameron all
hell breaks lose. John Malkovich as Cyrus ‘The Virus’ leads the revolt to
escape. John Cusack as US Marshall Vince Larkin is over seeing the process and
has to race against time to support Cameron save his friend and be reunited
with his wife and little girl. If that isn’t enough you have the Steve Buscemi
as Garland ‘The Marietta Mangler’ Greene who avoids the carnage while still
looking like he is the most dangerous man on the plan. When all this comes
together you can enjoy Cameron struggle and Cyrus’s one-liners from any point.
10. Resident Evil Series
Director: Paul W.S. Anderson (1,4,5), Alexander Witt
(2), Russell Mulcahy (3)
Starring: Milla Jovovich
Basic Story: Alice (Jovovich) fights against the
Umbrella cooperation who have effected the world with the undead.
Verdict: Based on the video game of the same name we
follow Alice through the outbreak in ‘Resident Evil’, Quarantine in
‘Apocalypse’, Survival in ‘Extinction’, Exposal of Umbrella in ‘Afterlife’ and
new instalment out later this year (2012). Through the series we get to meet
different characters from the video game including Carlos Olivera (Fehr) in
Apocalypse and Extinction, Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory)) in Apocalypse,
Afterlife and Retribution, Claire Redfield (Ali Larter) in Extinction and
Afterlife along with here Brother Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller) in
Afterlife. Alice has some very good fight scenes through out the series, which
always tries to stay up with the next generation on filmmaking. Whichever one
you watch you will be enjoying with the action as it unfolds.
9. Die Hard Series
Director: John McTiernan (Die Hard, Die Hard With A
Vengeance), Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2), Len Wiseman (Die Hard 4.0)
Starring: Bruce Willis
Basic Story: John McClane (Willis) has to take on
different types of villains all-trying to cause chaos while breaking the rules.
Verdict: Rated as one of the best alternative
Christmas film John McClane takes on Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) at his wife’s
Christmas party in Die Hard. While in Die Hard 2 he takes on Colonel Stuart
(William Sadler) who terrorises an Airport where John’s Wife is due to arrive
in over the Christmas time. In the third instalment Die Hard with a Vengeance
John Teams up with civilian Zeus Carver (Samuel L. Jackson) to take on Hans
Gruber brother Simon Gruber (Jeremy Irons) and the fourth John teams up with
computer hacker Matt Ferrell (Justin Long) to take on Thomas Gabriel (Timothy
Olyphant) who is taking on the Government to prove a point. Each of John
mission are great watches pick up from any point.
8. Knowing
Director: Alex Proyas
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Chandler Canterbury, Rose
Byrne
Basic Story: A teacher opens a time capsule that has
been dug up at his son’s elementary school: in it are some chilling predictions
some that have already occurred and others that are about to happen. That lead
him to believe his family plays a role in the events that are about to unfold.
Verdict: Yes Nicolas Cage again this time he isn’t
taking on a crazed villain he is just trying to save his family. This is more a
thriller and doesn’t have the best acting but has some of the best action
sequences and a very good mystery factor even with that you can pick up anywhere
and enjoy, as it is easy to follow and enjoy for all.
7. The Running Man
Director: Paul Michael Glaser
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Conchita
Alonso, Yaphet Kotto
Basic Story: A wrong convicted man must try to
survive a public execution gauntlet staged as a TV game show
Verdict: Based on a Stephen King novel but not a
horror this action film is one of Arnie’s very cheesy best with some of his
most legendary one-liners. Including some of the very funniest villains
including Subzero, Dynamo, Fireball and Captain Freedom all add something for
Ben Rodgers (Schwarzenegger) to fight off before exposing the truth.
