6. G.I. Joe The Rise OF Cobra

Director: Stephen Sommers

Starring: Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans

Basic Story: An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out the pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer

Verdict: Back again as a villain Chronopher Eccleston plays the leader of the beginning part of the Cobra and his plan is to use stolen nano bytes that he created for US government use to take over the world, simple plan right? Wrong the Joes are out to stop them with over the top action scenes and the destruction of the Eiffel Tower the Joes close in on the whereabouts of the Villains. With some strong supporting casts and likeable characters this is one that could be pock up at any point  to watch the rise of Cobra. 

5. The Mummy/ The Mummy Returns

Director: Stephen Sommers

Starring: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah.

Basic Story: Rick (Fraser), Evelyn (Weisz) and Jon (Hannah) must fight to prevent Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) taking over the world on too separate occasions.

Verdict: Supernatural action adventures are few and far between and this one is one of my favourites with hugely entertaining action scenes filled with a nice comic tone to keep the serious side of the film under wraps. Brendan Fraser as an action lead is surprisingly good but it is his comic release timing that makes him such a good choice for the role. All the supporting casts in both add something to the story both the first two are well worth watching while the third one isn’t really to the same standard these two created.

4. Star Trek

Director: J.J. Abrams

Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg

Basic Story: A chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS enterprise crewmembers

Verdict: A Star Trek reboot the fan boys will not be happy but Mr Abrams proved everybody wrong by doing something very simple just re-creating history. Chris Pine as Kirk is excellent piece of casting along with Zachary Quinto as Spook equally as good a choice. I personally find this to be one of the very best sci-fi films ever made. When I see this one on I switch it on and wherever the story is I seem to wacth to the end because of how enjoyable it is.

3. 2012

Director: Roland Emmerich

Starring: John Cusack, Thandie Newton, Chiwetel Ejiofor

Basic Story: An epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggles of the survivors.

Verdict: Roland Emmerich usually likes to destroy America; with this one he goes one better he takes out the WHOLE world. Whether its Jackson Curtis (Cusack) quest to survive with his family or Adrian Helmsley (Ejiofor) trying to prove how greedy survival can be to the suits of the world. President (Danny Glover) is up their with one of the best screen Presidents created by not being one of the cowardly types and is more than a man who realises how bad the situation the world faces is. With some of the most over the top action scenes you will ever see this really is just a sit back and relax film.

2. Armageddon

Director: Michael Bay

Starring: Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Ben Affleck

Basic Story: When an asteroid the size of Texas is headed for Earth the world’s best deep core drilling ream is sent to nuke the rock from the inside.

Verdict: When people see Michael Bay films they expect many over the top unnecessary explosions which in some like Transformers is very true, but when it comes to Armageddon everything seems to come together perfectly add in to the mix J.J. Abrams writing credit you know what you are going to get. With the emotional level created as the journey continues increases the appeal to keep watching. The support cast including the likes of Will Patton, Steve Buscemi, Michael Clarke Duncan, William Fitchner, Peter Stormare and Owen Wilson are brilliant at keeping the lead characters feet on the ground.

1. Independence Day

Director: Roland Emmerich

Starring: Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum

Basic Story: The aliens are coming and their goal is to invade and destroy. Fighting superior technology, man’s best weapon is the will to survive

Verdict: Emmerich again in what I would consider his finest film to date. This came out as Will Smith was just becoming the huge star he is now and it went along way to help staple him in leading man material. Bill Pullman brings yet another top President performance right down to the way he gets in the plane to help the soldiers fight the aliens. Jeff Goldblum as underachieving genius who figures out the plans of the aliens. These three come together as your three leads and do a great job. Action sequences mostly cities being destroyed are brilliant along with the fight pilots and small alien craft chases which add some more edge of your seat factor. You can sit down and watch the Americans save the day again,

Honourable mentions

• Inception, but only once you have seen it all once
• Southland Tales, Again needs at least one viewing first
• Transformers 1 and 3, has a few dull bits can make you lose interest
• Law Abiding Citizen, You will cheer for wrong guy if you pick up wrong time.
• Deep Impact, bit like Armageddon with a bit less I guess fun.
• The Rock, I Feel it gets a bit serious so can't quite have a place on my list.
