Having The Avengers Assemble and The Dark Knight Rises out
in the next coming weeks and months I have decided to do my top six favourite
comic book films. Only one entry per franchise will be used, so I hope you
enjoy the list.
6. Kick-Ass
Director Matthew Vaughn takes Mark Miller and John Romita Jr
comic book in Kick-ass. This follows Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) who becomes
Kick-Ass who wants to fight crime, one problem for him is he can’t fight. After
a chance meeting with Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage who is brilliant) and foul mouth
Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) who do know how to fight they team up to take out
Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong). This film caused tones of controversies with the
language of Hit Girl as she is only 11 but in all honest this makes her
character stand out even more. Hugely enjoyable film well worthy of all the
praise it got.
5. 30 Days of Night
Director David Slade (Yes the one who went onto Twilight)
takes Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith Comic. The story is set in a small
Alaskan town, which gets plunged into darkness for 30 days. Sheriff Eben Oleson
(Josh Hartnett) and his ex wife Stella (Melissa George) are left to lead a
group of survivors, after the town comes under attack from vampires lead by
Marlow (Danny Huston). Very dark, very bloody, but mostly very enjoyable. Just
don’t bother wasting time watching the sequel.
4. Scott Pilgrim vs The World
Director Edgar Wright takes on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Graphic Novel. In
this we follow Scott Pilgrim’s (Michael Cera) who has to take on Ramona
Flowers’ (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) seven evil ex’s. Filled with a full range of different villains and a rock music
background you get a very special piece of film that is very enjoyable for all
viewers.
3. X-Men First Class
Director Matthew Vaughn reboots the X0men series from the
very beginning showing how Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magento (Michael
Fassbender) characters are created. Spending the film working together to help
other mutants come to terms with their differences. We meet a young Mystique
(Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) who do appear in the original.
Along with a brilliant villain in Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) who steals every
scene he is in we have a new generation superhero film that takes everything to
the next level.
2. Batman Begins/ Dark Knight
Director Christopher Nolan reboots the Batman series after
the disaster of Batman and Robin. Under the mask now is Christian Bale who has
as Bruce Wayne has spent his whole life training to take down the criminals of
Gotham City. Between the two films he takes on four villains who take
everything to the next level. First up we have Dr. Jonathan Crane or Scarecrow
(Cillian Murphy) who works for Ra Al Ghul (Liam Neeson) who tries to take down
Gotham City. After stopping these two, Batman has to take on the Joker (Oscar
winning performance from Heath Ledger) who lives for chaos and Harvey Dent who
becomes Two Face (Aaron Eckhart). These
two films are much darker than any of the other batman films and are both two
of the best ever made.
1. Watchmen
Director Zack Snyder takes on Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore’s
Graphic novel Watchmen. This follows a very different story to your traditional
comic book story. Starting with the murder of one of the heroes The Comedian
(Jeffrey Dean Morgan) we follow Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) who is
investigating what happened. Filled with flash backs to the young heroes and
present day with the heroes children all grown up. From the opening sequences you know this will be a very special
film and it delivers with its very dark bleak outlook on what could have
happened in the 1980’s.
Honourable mentions have to go to
- Ironman
- Thor
- X-Men first 3 before the reboot.
- Television Show The Walking Dead
